You will study many aspects of sport and outdoor recreation
through a combination of theory, practical and experiential learning
components. The programs provide students with the skills,
knowledge and professional ethics needed to make you a safe, caring
and capable sport and outdoor professional. Students are taught
by leading experts from the sport and recreation industry. The
programs cover a wide range of study areas including biophysical
foundations of movement, outdoor environmental and
wilderness studies, adventure education and risk management,
coaching, physiology, leadership, communication and wellbeing.
Such a broad array of study areas means you’ll enjoy a dynamic
learning experience. Studies are undertaken on and off campus
with flexible delivery options such as discussion groups, web-based
activities and study guides.

The Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation can be
completed over three years of full-time study. The course can
also be combined with a business and commerce degree, or an
education degree in primary or secondary education over four
years of full-time study.

Experiential learning in sport, movement, outdoor recreation, environments, communities
and wellbeing.


All single and double degrees in Monash University’s Sport and Outdoor Recreation courses put into practice the principles of Experiential Education. In the units they teach, Sport and Outdoor Recreation staff are committed to creating a strong and vibrant relationship between what happens in the lecture theatre, classroom tutorial, laboratory or outdoor classroom/university and professional fieldwork. Experiential learning programs include voluntary participation in community events such as ‘Bike Ride Around The Bay’ and ‘Melbourne Marathon’.

The Bachelor of Human Movement enables students to develop the necessary practical skills and theoretical knowledge to undertake careers in fields related to human movement. Years 1 and 2 of the course follow a core study program, year 3 and 4 allow specialisation in one of the following areas:

* Outdoor Education

This course is designed to provide its graduates with the skills and knowledge needed to pursue a variety of careers in areas of human movement such as:
• outdoor education teaching
• the sport and recreation industry

The outdoor education teaching specialization curriculum

Professional Experience
Practice Teaching in schools:

                          *PE 2 (5 week pure Outdoor Education teaching placement) and

                          *PE3 and 4 (9 week Outdoor Education/Health and Physical Education teaching placement)

Selection
Students are selected at the end of the 2nd year based on the following:
• Outdoor skills
• Technical skills
• Interpersonal skills
• Environmental literacy
• Academic skills

There are 15 places per year.

INFORMATION:
Bachelor of Education – Outdoor Education
A four year course providing a community and school-based approach to teacher education with general education in the field of outdoor education. Graduates are able to teach outdoor education and one other area in secondary schools, and also be a generalist primary school teacher.

Bachelor of Sport & Recreation Management – Outdoor Recreation
A three year course for those wanting to work in the variety of recreation and outdoor adventure entities that administer, coordinate or deliver recreation and adventure services.

PATHWAYS: Students who have successfully completed studies required for the award of a diploma in Outdoor Recreation from an Australian TAFE Institution will be exempted from the equivalent of one year of studies for the Outdoor Recreation course.  Graduates of the Bachelor of Sport & Recreation Management - Outdoor Recreation will be eligible for study credits towards the Bachelor of Education - Outdoor Education.
